ADOPTING A YORKIE
I want to adopt a yorkie. What do I do?

Adding a yorkie to your family is a serious decision to make. Yorkies take a lot of time and energy. It also is a big financial commitment. Food, toys and medical care costs can add up. Please consider al of these factors and talk about adopting with all members of your family. If you feel you are ready, please fill out an adoption application on our website.

I just submitted my adoption application. Now what?

The application will be sent to the person responsible for your region. It sometimes takes a couple days to get back to you. If you do not hear anything, feel free to email the person whose email is listed on your confirmation email.

Once my application has been submitted, how do I get approved for adoption?

Our application process includes checking the vet reference and 3 personal references listed on your application. After these have been done, we do a home visit to ensure that your family is right for one of our dogs. After these have been done, you are ready to adopt!

How do you choose which family gets to adopt each yorkie?

Please be aware that some foster moms get dozens of applications for one dog. The young, healthy female is more attractive to most families than the senior male. Giving more information on the adoption application makes it easier for them to get feeling for how your family is and makes you 'stand out' more. Email exchanges also help. Please keep in mind that the foster mom tries to find the best home that is suited to her foster's needs, and if you are not right for one dog, another that is perfect for your family may come into rescue in the future. Homes with yorkie experience and fenced in yards are given first preference.

Is there an age requirement for adopting a yorkie?

You must be at least 25 years of age to adopt. However, you also must be financially stable and have a suitable home environment to adopt. If the dog is going to live in your parents' home, they need to fill out the adoption application.

Do you have a shelter where we can come and meet the available pets?

No. We do not have a central location where you can meet all the pets. Our dogs are fostered in private foster homes, so that they can receive the utmost care while waiting for their adoptive homes.

What should I do if I want to meet one of the adoptable pets that I see listed on the "Looking for Love" page?

First, you should go to the dog's "Looking for Love" bio and read all the information about the pet. If you have any questions about the dog's fit with your home situation, feel free to contact the foster family by emailing the listed contact. Next, you should scroll to the bottom of the pet's information block, and click on the link that says "Adoption Application," the Adoption Application is the first step in the adoption process.

What if I've completed the application and haven't received a response?

You must understand that it does take time to review the applications, since we are all volunteers. If you are unsure if your application has been properly submitted or if you are unsure if it is still being considered please email the foster mom that is listed on the dog's bio, requesting the status of your application. When emailing to check the status of your application, please include your FULL NAME, ADDRESS, & CURRENT HOME TELEPHONE NUMBER. You application will be looked up, and you will be emailed with the status of your application.

I've emailed and have not received a response?

Please understand that it can take up to, and sometimes beyond 72 hours for our volunteers to respond to your email. If it has been more than 4-5 days since you emailed, please feel free to email again.

I've submitted an Adoption Application, and it was not approved. What does this mean?

This means that you are not the most appropriate home for the pet of your choice and could be for one of many reasons. But you may be considered for another dog we are fostering.

I would like to know why my application has not been approved.

United Yorkie Rescue does not encourage its foster mom's to reveal the reason for not approving an application. This policy prevents tailoring an application and avoids misunderstandings between the prospective adoptive family and the person reviewing the application. You can always apply for another dog or reapply should the situation in your home or family change.

Where will I be going to visit with the pet?

Since each pet is in an individual foster home you will be going to one of our private foster homes. Or, the foster person may choose to visit you in your home to meet with the pet to evaluate interactions with you, your family and other pets in the household. Before a visit can occur, you must have filed an adoption application that has been approved by the foster home.

What is a home visit?

A home visit is an evaluation of the home environment and the all members of the prospective adoptive family. When possible, the foster mom will conduct the visit. If the distance is too great, another UYR member, or even the member of an associated rescue group may conduct the visit. All arrangements are negotiated between the foster home and the prospective family.

TRANSPORTATION
What if I want to adopt a yorkie that is located in another state?

We do adopt out-of-state, however, the primary responsibility of the transport is the adopters, but we will assist to whatever extent possible. We do not ship our dogs. However, occasionally the adoptive family will fly to the location and carry the dog back in the airplane cabin (please check with the airline for extra costs this may incur).

CHILDREN
Does UYR adopt to families with children?

Due to their size, personality and legal liabilities, we are very cautious when adopting to a home with children. Unless you have a strong background with the breed, each application will be reviewed on case by case. Please read the dog's biography to get an idea of how he/she would do with children, or email his/her foster mom.

ADOPTION DONATIONS
How much does it cost to adopt a yorkie?

Adoption donations range from $150-$800, depending on the age and health of the dog.

Why aren't yorkies free? Don't they need good homes?

The adoption donations very rarely cover the costs of vetting for our dogs. We do not come close to breaking even on costs of vetting. We rely on donations from caring people to cover for some of our expenses. Remember, we are a 501 (c)(3) approved organization and all of our members are volunteers so all of the money that the organization raises goes towards the dogs.

POISONING INFORMATION
My dog may have ingested something. What should I do?

Kansas State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital is offering a FREE 24 hours poison control hotline for pet owners and veterinarians. 1+785-532-5679 is the number and the service has been available since 1969. Dr Oehme, a vet and professor in toxicology and pathology oversees the hotline. Dr Oehme offers these suggestions:

- Be patient. The person answering the phone may have to take a few minutes to consult the vet on duty.

- Call as soon as possible. Immediate attention might save your animal. But waiting to see if there is a reaction could cost your animal their life.

- Have any product labels available for answers. The vet might need to know milligrams and generic names.

- Know your pet. Drooling could only mean he is thrilled to see you!

- Know that the toxicologists are also taking calls from vets about other animals and other problems, including those problems with large animals.
